Electrical safety tips to protect your kids and your home or business in Licking County, Ohio.

The electrical system is one of the most important parts of any home or business as it helps to ensure you have a reliable source of energy and power. Safety in the home is one of Weekley Electric’s top priorities as we work with our customers in their homes and place of business. While an electrical system is very important, it does pose some risk and danger to all households and businesses. This is especially true if you have children or children coming in to the place of business.

Fortunately, there are a variety of tips that can be followed that can help to ensure that any children in a home are safe from hazards related to your electrical system.

Install Covers
One of the easiest and most effective ways that you can keep your kids safe from electricity in your home is to install outlet covers. While outlets are normally polarized and properly protected, an exposed outlet does still pose a hazard to a curious child. If a child was to stick a knife or other metal device into the outlet, it could cause a dangerous shock. To protect against this, you should purchase and install some plastic outlet covers. These are challenging for a child to remove and will reduce the risk of an electrical accident.

Hide Wires
One of the biggest electrical hazards and dangers in a home are exposed wires. If there are any exposed wires in your home or office, they pose a big risk to anyone that is on your property. To ensure that all children and adults are safe, you should have any exposed wires properly protected. This will greatly help to reduce the risk of a related accident from occurring.

Keep Water Away from Electronics
Many home electrical accidents occur because someone is using electrical devices near standing water. Because of this, the biggest risk occurs when smaller appliances are used in either the bathroom or kitchen. To ensure that everyone is safe, you should make sure that you never have water pooled or running when you are near an electrical device. Furthermore, you should make a habit of unplugging any electrical devices that are not in use. This will reduce your risks and save energy.

Educate All Family Members
Most of all, you need to make sure that you educate all people in your family about the risks that come with using electricity. This should include helping people in your family identify concerns and red flags and make sure that they know how to use all electrical devices safely. Educating your kids will help to make sure that they are being as safe as possible, even when you are not around.
